Kiss Your Homies Goodnight is a catchphrase in which men playfully suggest that it's good to kiss their friends goodnight and that it's not a homosexual act. The phrase has been used in many reaction image memes in which it's suggested to be a very positive and necessary act.

Origin

The first known post to use the phrase "kiss your homies goodnight" was tweeted January 20th, 2017 by user @goodstuffcris^[1] using the In This House format (shown below).

Spread

On September 27th, 2017, Urban Dictionary user gregdan^[2] uploaded a definition of the phrase to the site (shown below).

Over the following several years, the phrase began seeing use in reaction images and image macros espousing the positivity of kissing homies goodnight. Examples include posts by Instagram user herecomedatboi^[3] (shown below, left) and a Sleeping Shaq meme posted in /r/memes by Sl3nderMusic^[4] (shown below, right).

Other, more popular examples include a Tumblr post by positivememes^[5] that gained over 3,200 notes (shown below, left). An example posted to the Facebook page Wholesome Memes^[6] using a Monsters Inc. reaction image gained over 12,000 reactions (shown below, right).

Kiss Your Homies Goodnight Guys Get Engaged

On February 17th, 2022, a meme was posted to /r/wholesomememes^[7] by Redittor DerpyluvU that claimed the two guys from the Kiss Your Homies Goodnight meme had gotten engaged. The post (shown below, left) received roughly 5,500 upvotes in less than 24 hours. However, it was never proven that the men pictured in each photograph were the same people. In fact, the photo of the men getting engaged actually came from a 2017 Facebook post (shown below, right), reported on by African news outlets in 2018.^[8]

On October 27th, 2017, is when the earliest known post of the men getting engaged was uploaded to /r/gaybros^[9] by Redditor AfrikanFag, earning roughly 19,500 upvotes over the course of four years (shown below).
