Mark Phillips in Disbelief refers to a GIF of RDCWorld1 collective member Mark Phillips grabbing his forehead and looking left and right in disbelief. Hailing from a 2018 video, in the 2020s the GIF achieved popularity as a caption format, being paired with captions in which conveying shock that some negligent mistake has been made.

Origin

On December 13th, 2018, YouTube[1] channel RDCworld1 uploaded a comedy video "How Hard These New Challenger Computers Be Fighting On Super Smash Bros Ultimate". In the video, RDCworld1 Mark Phillips enters a match being confident that a CPU opponent will be easy to beat, but starts suspecting that the enemy fighter is human-controlled after it puts up a hard fight. After getting beaten, Phillips stares at the screen, grabbing his head and looking left and right in disbelief. The video (shown below) received over 790,000 views in five years.

On January 6th, 2021, X[2] user @SameraFletcher made the earliest found post that used the clip of Phillips grabbing his head as a GIF caption format. The post (shown below) received over 1,900 reposts and 11,000 likes in three years.

In the following years, the GIF achieved popularity as a caption format on Discord, with GIFs being uploaded to Tenor for future use in the messaging app. For example, on July 2nd, 2022, Tenor[3] user Exoticxavier posted a version caption "He was allied?" (shown below).

On August 2nd, 2022, Redditor Honey-Waffle posted a GIF caption meme referencing The Magic School Bus that received over 17,000 upvotes in the /r/whenthe[4] subreddit in two years (shown below).

Starting in June 2022, the photo has been used as a reaction image meme on Twitter and Discord, as well as other sites or social media platforms, to express shock and surprise.
