About

Midjourney Remix is a feature in the image-generative AI Midjourney that allows users to effectively merge two pictures together. Added as a part of the v4 algorithm, the feature gained virality in early November 2022 as users posted their photo combinations to various sites and platforms.

History

On November 5th, 2022, V4 algorithms of the image-generative AI Midjourney entered public testing on the Midjourney Discord server.[1] The V4 base model added support for advanced functionality like image prompting and multi-prompts among other things, changing the Remix Mode so that it can effectively combine two images, borrowing and mixing elements, composition and color palette from both.

On November 7th, the Telegram[2] channel @strangedalle published a collection of seven images that used the Remix Mode to effectively merge two different images in a similar way that the FaceApp Face Morphing tool would (examples shown below). The original post gained over 54,900 views on Telegram in two days, while the images were widely reposted by various channels. For example, later that day, the Telegram[3] channel @dvachannel reposted the images, with the post accumulating over 304,000 views in a similar timeframe.

On November 8th, 2022, @strangedalle[4] shared more remixed images based on the prompts suggested in the comments, with this post also receiving viral spread (shown below).

In the following days, the Midjourney Remix Mode was then covered by various media, including Medialeaks[5] and DTF,[6] while more merged images were created and shared by users on Telegram, Twitter and other social media.

Features

Midjourney Remix Mode allows users to combine two images, mixing their elements, composition and color palette with a 50:50 distribution. The function is available via the official Midjourney Discord[7] server and requires "MJ Version 4" and "Remix mode" to be enabled via the /settings command, followed by the /imagine command with links to two images the user wishes to combine.

Sorry, as a guide over at midjourney, I have to correct a few things here.
What is described here is not "Remix". That is a different feature that I will detail below. What is being described here is multiple image prompting, and that has been a feature since at least version 2, and at least as far back as May 2, 2022. (see post https://discord.com/channels/662267976984297473/970862509701595166/970871499357565018 )

What might be causing the confusion is that image prompting is not available in the --test and --testp modes, which began in August 28, 2022, and which were never considered to be "mainline versions" of the software (hence not receiving a version number), and were only intended to be around for 48 hours maximum (although they are still around).

Another reason for the resurgence of multiple image prompting was that in version 4, the feature became much more coherent and "logical" in its ability to merge images

What "Remix" is, on the other hand, a feature that was released to the public on October 11, 2022 (see https://discord.com/channels/662267976984297473/952771221915840552/1029507529971081306 ) for all versions of the software (v 3 and test(p) at the time) , and enables users to change a prompt when using the vary feature, those adding in elements that didn't exist before.
