About

The Mirror Run Challenge refers to a series of TikTok videos in which users run or fall using mirrors as a visual effect.

Origin

The first example of the Mirror Run Challenge is unknown. On February 7th, 2019, the first compilation was uploaded to YouTube by Best TikToks – Dank Memes on TikTok App and accumulated 56,000 views in a month (shown below).



Precursor

The Mirror Run Challenge was inspired by the Naruto Run and parodies of the song "Deja Vu" by Dave Rogers.

Naruto Run refers to the unique running style of the protagonist Naruto Uzumaki in the Japanese anime series Naruto, where he is often depicted sprinting with his arms stretched behind him.

Deja Vu is a song by Dave Rogers from the anime series Initial D. The song has since been used on the soundtrack to various YouTube Eurobeat remixes.



Spread

On February 9th, 2019, Jaze Phua uploaded "#MirrorRunChallenge #NarutoMirrorRun #MirrorRun
FIRST Mirror Run Challenge by @JazePhua" to YouTube as it had been since been taken down from TikTok (shown below). NextShark[1] labelled Jaze Phua the unofficial winner of the challenge because as of February 20th the TikTok video had



On February 14th, TikTok US-UK uploaded another compilation to YouTube (shown below, left). The video gained 39,000 views in a month. On February 18th, Tia Rose uploaded the most popular compilation with 2.8 million views in a month (shown below, right).



Many YouTubers uploaded tutorials on how to perform the challenge like Super Duo on March 6th (shown below, left). On March 9th, 2019, YouTuber Julien Barn uploaded a popular version of the challenge which accumulated 1.3 million views in a few weeks (shown below, right).
