About
Moymoy Palaboy is a Filipino comic and singing duo known for their uploaded lip sync videos in YouTube. The duo consists of the Obeso brothers, James Ronald (a.k.a. Moymoy) and Rodfil (a.k.a. Roadfill). They are now GMA Network contract artists.[1]
Youtube debut
The Moymoy Palaboy duo uploaded their first video on March 17 2007 as their first attempt at a lip-dub with a grainy webcam. The result:
Although it wasn't a really "big" success by Youtube standards with an average viewcount of 194 000 views, the group continued to focus on lip-dub as their primary source of visual comedy for their channel[2].
To date, their most successful video, garnering more than 19 million views is MARIMAR, was uploaded June 16 2008:
Legal issue with Youtube
On March 26, 2009, the moymoypalaboy Youtube account was suspended for copyright issues concerning the songs they were using for their show. A new Youtube account was created that same day called moymoypalaboyteam. The original "moymoypalaboy" YouTube account was eventually reactivated on April 8, 2009.
Fame and Contracts
On June 27 2008, they appeared on GMA Network's Bubble Gang in which they became regulars[3]. The popularity of their videos helped them recording their first genuine song in the end of 2008[4].
By 2010, the duo has even been hired to do several Coca-Cola commercials:
They also did several lip-dub videos with different Filipino celebrities[5] and they have their own official website at moymoypalaboy.com.ph.
Sub-fads: Miku Miku Dance
EVERYBODY
On June 22 2009, Moymoy Palaboy did a lip-dub video featuring Backstreet's Boys single EVERYBODY, guest-starring Mark Herras.
Gathering more than 6 million views to date, the video was left relatively untouched until two years later. Between April and July 2011, Nico Nico Douga user eiennno/えいぼら posted two videos of his Miku Miku Dance testing regarding skins and moves to match the initial video. The first was 20 seconds long[6] and featured three characters from the Hetalia anime show, the second one took only one character as a comparison[7]:
The idea was to produce a video for the upcoming 7th MMD cup that was hold in August.
The final rendition submitted for that event was released as a separate video on August 19[8]. It featured three characters from the Touhou series and has gathered more than 200 000 views to date. The following is a reupload since the original video has been taken down for copyright claims:
The ensuing fad took hold on Nico Nico Douga as people reused the motion data for their own videos[9].
However, on Youtube, its popularity exploded when a comparison video was featured on Ryan Seacrest's official website[10] and on Smosh[11], both in the beginning of September. Bringing a new audience to it, it also added more than 800 000 views.
More parodies soon followed:
The Moymoy Palaboy brothers eventually acknowledged the phenomenon in a TV interview:
Transcript from Tagalog to English thanks to KYM user Fei Hazelwood:
This is Moymoy Palaboy’s latest video lipsyncing to the Backsteet Boys’ song, Everybody, accompanied by Mark Herras. This video has reached almost three million views since its first posting in 2009.
Transition
There was even an anime version, made by a Japanese fan. The movements are mirrored almost perfectly in the animation, down to details like facial expressions. People who enjoyed it include Hollywood Host Ryan Seacrest who posted it to his website.
Transition
[Interviewing Rodfill]
I was surprised, because at first I only saw it as an animation, but then I got this creeping feeling that, y’know, their moves looked so familiar, you know what I mean? Then I realized, “Hey, that’s us!” Then when someone synced us with that video, with the anime itself, it really was based on us! We found it really funny!
VOLARE
Similar to the EVERYBODY phenomenon, some parodies were also made from another Moymoy video in which they lip-sync VOLARE by the Gipsy Kings:
Although not as big as the previous phenomenon, this fad influenced people to add fake mustaches to their models.
