Mundian To Bach Ke (translated as "Beware Of The Boys") is a song by British musician Panjabi MC with locals and lyrics by Punjabi artist Labh Janjua. The song is in the bhangra music genre, and was initially produced and released as part of Panjabi MC's 1998 album Legalised, but received universal popularity and acclaim after being released as a single in Germany in 2002. The song is widely recognized as one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide. Online, the song has become well-known as the "Indian Music Meme" or "Indian Meme Song" with the track frequently used for humorous effect in memes on social media.

Origin

In 1998, British-Indian producer and DJ Panjabi MC released his album Legalised, which contained a track named "Mundian To Bach Ke." The name translates to "Beware of the Boys," and is a blend of the music genres of bhangra and hip-hop. The along became an underground sleeper bit, mostly fueled by early internet downloads. On November 25th, 2002, the track was released as a single in Germany, where it sold over 100,000 copies in two days and quickly topped the German Singles Charts.[3] Soon after, the song topped the charts in Italy, reaching the number-one slot in three weeks.[4] A remix of the song featuring Jay-Z was released in 2003 and can be accessed via Panjabi MC's official YouTube[5] channel where it gathered over 200,000 views in three years (seen below).



Spread

In December 2012, a video of a group of British men sitting in a car while one of them sings the tune of the song went viral on Facebook and YouTube[6]. The as of yet are unidentified. The earliest viral video was posted to YouTube on December 19th, 2012, by magicians3, gathering over 9 million views in nearly ten years (seen below).



The song was remixed, bass-boosted and uploaded to YouTube[7] on August 25th, 2019 by YouTuber The Boss COON, alongside the title, "EXTREME LOUD INDIAN MUSIC!" The upload has gathered over 10 million views in three years (seen below).



Both the original audio and the bass-boosted version have grown popular on TikTok, with the original song having over 20,000 videos made using it,[8] and the bass-boosted version having over 5,000 videos made using it.[9]
