Raw Dog or Rawdog is a slang term that translates to doing something without prior preparation, protection or additional tools. The term was originally used in a sexual context, with people referring to having sex without a condom as "raw dogging." As colloquial use of the term evolved, the phrase "raw dog" came to be used to describe doing a task without supplementary materials or help, as seen in the "rawdogging flights" trend of 2024.

Origin

The etymology of the term "raw dog" comes from the words "raw" (as in without a condom) and "dog out" as in approaching someone sexually.^[1]

One of the earliest known recorded uses of the term "raw dog" was the 1999 DMX song "Good Girls, Bad Guys," in which rapper DMX says, "I have you in the back of the Chevelle / Like what (what) hittin' it raw dogg in the butt."^[2]

The term "raw dog" was then consistently used in a sexual context throughout the 2000s and 2010s, as seen in an Urban Dictionary post from January 28th, 2006, that described it as "fuckin sluts with no rubber."

However, a subsequent Urban Dictionary definition from February 23rd, 2012, shows the term being defined in a non-sexual context, such as "raw dogging" an exam by writing it without preparation.^[3]

On March 8th, 2013, Redditor^[6] /u/weaseldick posted to the subreddit /r/Nexus4, writing, "Anyone raw dogging it with no screen protector? I have the cockring but I'm afraid of scratches, how resistant is the screen against scratching?" The post marks an early example of the term "raw dogging" being used in a non-sexual context.

The colloquial use of the term "raw dog" in nonsexual contexts saw a sharp uptick in 2017, as seen in a May 17th, 2017, post by Twitter^[4] / X user @feliciaday, who wrote, "Raw Dogging it as a mom is going out and only carrying one diaper and a burpie cloth. #yoloparenting," and gathered over 2,000 likes in seven years.

On August 21st, 2017, the X^[5] account @BarstoolBigCat posted a picture of Donald Trump staring into the eclipse, writing, "Gotta love Trump Rawdogging the eclipse," and gathering over 30,000 likes in seven years.

On January 19th, 2022, the Instagram^[7] page @sadasscats posted a meme that read, "no meds, no therapy, just me raw dogging life." The post gathered over 22,000 likes in two years.

The term "raw dogging" saw a sharp increase in usage in 2019 and 2020, as noted by linguist and content creator Adam Aleksic in a 2024 New York Times interview.^[8]
