About
Ruth Smiling, also known as Old Woman From Widow's Bay or the Old Lady Smiling Meme, is a reaction image and image macro format depicting the character Ruth (played by actress K Callan) from the 2026 Apple TV series Widow's Bay smiling and looking at Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) while wearing a grey sweater with flowers on it and headphones around her neck.
Similar to the Sure, Grandma, Let's Get You To Bed or Abe Simpson Talking To Kids formats, the meme is typically used alongside captions in which people describe something outdated or shocking that makes them feel old, such as a millennial describing something like a landline phone to a member of Gen Z or Gen Alpha.
The meme originally appeared on Threads in early July 2026, spreading over the following months. While the scene comes from the 10th and final episode of season one of Widow's Bay, the picture typically used in the meme is slightly altered with AI.
Origin
The image from the meme is a slightly AI-edited screenshot taken from season one, episode 10 of the Apple TC horror series Widow's Bay, which was released on June 17th, 2026, titled "We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!"
The scene takes place when the character Tom Loftis (played by actor Matthew Rhys) goes to confront Ruth (K Callan) in an attempt to solve the curse of the island and prevent their doom. Ruth is one of the oldest people in the town at age 84 in the show.
For unknown reasons, the image typically used in the meme is altered with AI, slightly changing Ruth's flowers on her sweater, making the scene lighter and other minor edits (AI version above, original scene below).[1]
The first known meme using the image of Ruth looking at Tom was shared on July 9th, 2026, by Threads[2] user parohome, which referenced how they felt old as an "elder millennial" finding a new band and wanting to recommend it to their friends. The post garnered over 4,100 likes and 20 comments in a month.
