About
Sans Undertale vs. Arataka Reigen was the final match of an informal competition to determine the best Tumblr Sexyman, hosted on Twitter by "Tumblr Sexyman OTD" in September 2022. The Twitter poll generated intense interest from fans of both characters. Ultimately, Sans beat Arataka Reigen to become the "Ultimate Tumblr Sexyman" by a mere 0.2 percent in a poll that attracted over 200,000 votes. The competition generated memes from fans of each character, and some joked the poll influenced more serious current events, such as Queen Elizabeth II's death.
Origin
On September 5th, 2022, Twitter account @sexymanOTD, an account devoted to posting about various "Tumblr Sexyman" characters, posted a bracket announcing a "semiannual sexyman showdown." The announcement[1] gained over 1,200 retweets and 10,000 likes (shown below).
On September 7th, after conducting two days' worth of polls, the account[2] announced that Sans and Arataka Reigen would face off in the finals of the bracket.

On the day of the final poll, September 7th, 2022, many Twitter users made jokes and fan art supporting one of the two contestants. For example, on the Sans side, Twitter user @Han__sama[3] posted art in support of Sans, gaining over 470 retweets and 2,500 likes in five days (shown below, left). User @vilecreampuffs[4] posted art of Reigen, gaining over 90 retweets and 440 likes in the same amount of time (shown below, right).
Later on September 7th, @SexymanOTD[5] announced that Sans won the championship (shown below, left). The poll was essentially even in its final minutes before closing, but Sans was able to win by a score of 50.1 percent to 49.9 percent.[6] The poll had over 244,000 voters (shown below, right).
On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died, leading to a flood of memes conflating the two events. Many joked that the intensity of the poll was too much for the Queen to bear, such as user @Panidanya,[7] who posted a meme that gained over 28,000 retweets and 154,000 likes in four days (shown below, left). Others joked that the Queen was an intense Reigen fan, and his loss led to her demise. For example, Tumblr user postingjustwhatever[8] posted a meme that gained over 21,000 notes in three days (shown below, right).
