About

Our Hero, Balthazar is a 2025 American comedy-drama film directed and produced by New York-based film producer Oscar Boyson, with Boyson and Ricky Camilleri providing the screenplay. The movie's premise revolves around a wealthy teenager, played by actor Jaeden Martell, from New York City traveling to Texas to stop a mass shooter (Asa Butterfield) from executing his plan. The nature of the film's subject matter, as well as its use of dark humor, led Our Hero, Balthazar to become the subject of online discourse, as well as a source of various memes and trends, surrounding its theatrical release in late March 2026.

History

Our Hero, Balthazar is a dark comedy film that premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 8th, 2025, with a wider theatrical release on March 27th, 2026. The film marks the directorial debut of Oscar Boyson, who also produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Ricky Camilleri.

The story follows a wealthy teenager who tries to get his crush's attention by posting videos calling for stricter gun laws. When an online troll begins mocking his content, he becomes convinced the troll may be a mass shooter, leading him to travel to Texas in an attempt to confront him.

A trailer for the film was uploaded to the Picturehouse YouTube[1] channel on March 10th, 2026, garnering over 665,000 views, 12,000 likes and 560 comments in roughly two months.

Reception

The film was received positively by audiences, with review aggregate sites such as Metacritic[2] indicating a "Generally Favorable" Metascore and Letterboxd[6] giving it a 3.7 out of five stars.

As of May 2026, Our Hero, Balthazar retains a critical score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Critics Consensus[3] reading, "Oscillating between brutal humor and unsettling insight, Our Hero, Balthazar is an audacious and often astonishing directorial debut tinged with riveting performances and sprawling thematic ambition." The film also retains 98 percent audience score on the site.[3]

Online Presence

Our Hero, Balthazar and discussions around it received increased interest shortly following its wider release in March 2026.

In April 2026, a scene from the film, in which the character Balthazar Malone, played by actor Jaeden Martell, asks, "Why did you r-pe me?" garnered attention on social media. The extreme nature of the scene, especially out of context, facilitated its spread online as it became featured in memes.

On April 23rd, 2026, Instagram user @thedepressedgenzposted the clip with the description, "This scene from Our Hero Balthazar Movie is actually insane 😭💀did NOT expect it to go like this…" though the clip did not widely circulate, receiving roughly 150 likes in two weeks.[4]

On April 30th, 2026, Instagram[5] user @swishboro used the clip to summarize the recent matchup between the NBA teams the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. The post received over 67,900 likes in about four days.

@jeffrauseo

Our Hero, Balthazar got under my skin and never let go. The film follows Balthazar, a wealthy New York City teenager who starts posting cringey videos online to impress his activist crush. When an internet troll begins mocking him, Balthazar becomes convinced the guy is planning an act of extreme violence. So he gets on a plane to Texas to confront him. Starring Jaeden Martell and Asa Butterfield and directed by Oscar Boyson in a stunning feature debut, this is one of the most audacious American films I’ve seen in years. It’s parts dark comedy, psychological thriller, social commentary, horror, and a deeply uncomfortable mirror held up to social media culture, male loneliness, and the performance of doing good. The film is in select theaters this weekend. Go see it – and if you can’t, make sure you catch it on demand or streaming later.
