This Shit Is So Ass is a catchphrase and reaction image of a panel from the Oshi no Ko manga. The image went viral in July 2024 on X, former Twitter, and Reddit, being mostly used to criticize the bad quality of a manga, anime, TV show or a game.

Origin

On June 12th, 2024, chapter 152^[1] of the Oshi no Ko manga was released on Weekly Young Jump magazine. In the chapter, the character Akane appears crying while watching the first screening of a documentary about the story of one of the series's main characters. (seen below)

On the same day, X^[5] user @BennoSubs posted an edited version of the manga panel on the Oshi no Ko Discord server (seen below), replacing the original text with the phrase "This shit is so ass," which they later revealed in a tweet on October 29th, 2024, amassing roughly 107 likes in a month.

On July 10th, 2024, approximately a month after the manga chapter was released, the panel was edited with the phrase "This shit is so ass" and used as a reaction image across X, former Twitter and Reddit. X^[2] user @zeekrinoposted one of the earliest known viral mentions of the meme (seen below), adding a caption complaining about the quality of the current season of Valorant which amassed more than 854 likes and 14 reposts in three months.

The reaction image achieved popularity on X and Reddit over the following months, especially among anime and gaming fans displeased with the quality of their favorite series. For example, on July 14th, 2024, X^[3] user @shikiakitogainu posted the "This shit is so ass" meme accompanied by the caption "reading 2000s ya*i manga," which received roughly 4,100 likes and 786 reposts in three months.

On August 6th, 2024, Redditor^[4] u/4omine posted the reaction image to criticize the Animated Justice League War Film. The post received more than 511 upvotes and 51 comments in two months.
