Part of a series on Pokémon. [View Related Entries]

About

Two Two (Japanese: トゥートゥー) refers to a series of videos and images showing the Pokémon specie Xatu, also known in Japan as Natio (ネイティオ, Neitio), shouting out his in-game cry that sounds like "Two Two" to most people in Japan, while sometimes zany images and animations show up.

Origin

On November 11th, 2006, one thread was posted to a /poke/ (Pokémon) board at 2channel.[1] The board was for discussing all about Pokémon. In that thread, they talked about their love for Xatu and his powerful and philosophical look (e.g. his eyes) in particular, while they began creating Two Two’s parody images. On January 3, 2007, a Wiki page[2] was launched to sort parody images and Shift-JIS art[3] released on that thread.

Spread

On the popular Japanese video-sharing website, Nico Nico Douga (NND), his cry soon became a subject for MAD videos. The first Two Two video was uploaded on September 2nd, 2007, which featured a popular Touhou Project song "Marisa stole the precious thing".

On February 2nd, 2010, NND users held their own online event "Xatu Thanksgiving" (トゥートゥー感謝祭, Two Two kansyasai) to praise Xatu. Over 30 MAD movies were posted at that day.[4] There are over 300 Two Two MADs uploaded on NND[5], while YouTube has fewer Two Two MADs.[6] Moreover, many fanarts for Xatu are uploaded to the Japanese illustrators community pixiv.[7]

This strange popularity of Xatu on the web is described in several internet encyclopedia such as Uncyclopedia[8] and Nico Nico Pedia.[9]
