Water In The Fire Why? refers to an Engrish catchphrase said by Hololive virtual YouTuber talent Inugami Korone in a clip while she's playing Super Mario Bros., in which she wonders how the fire bar obstacle is still burning while it's underwater. Her reaction became the subject of animations and other memes among the community in the 2020s.

Origin

On October 13th, 2020, Inugami Korone started a livestream on her YouTube^[1] titled "【English only!】日本語を喋ったらダメなマリオ【Super Mario Bros.】". In the livestream, she is playing Super Mario Bros, but she can only speak in English. Around the 1:22:56 timestamp, she wonders by asking in Engrish why the fire bar obstacles in the game are still burning, though it's underwater.

On October 22nd, 2020, YouTube^[2] user Omega Kun uploaded the clip of Korone wondering why the fire bar obstacles were still burning underwater. The video received more than 566,000 views in five years.

The clip became an animation meme subject in the community in the 2020s. For example, on October 20th, 2020, YouTube^[3] user tian nya uploaded a fan animation of Korone in a lab, wondering why the fire was still burning underwater. The video received more than 5.2 million views in five years.

On March 21st, 2021, YouTuber^[4] MatPat, through The Game Theorists channel, uploaded a video titled "Game Theory: Mario's Secret Fire Power is… Rocket Fuel!" In the video, he explains several theories of Mario's fireball power. Around the 7:20 timestamp, he mentioned Korone's question on how the fire was still burning underwater.

On February 3rd, 2026, Korone started a livestream on her YouTube^[5] titled "【✋】ホロガーーーーーーーード!" In the livestream, she is playing the Papers, Please inspired video game Hologuards . Around the 2:07:35 timestamp, when she checked her own character, she forgot her "water in the fire" catchphrase and accidentally let the fake one enter the Hololive office.

On February 4th, 2026, YouTube^[6] user Just Egg-san uploaded a clip of Korone forgetting her infamous catchphrase, including the "water in the fire" meme compilations.
