When A Girl Says She Watches Anime refers to parodies of a tweet from an anime fan who claimed that when girls say they "like anime," they mean they watch well-known shows, providing Demon Slayer, Hunter X Hunter, My Hero Academia and Death Note as their examples. The meme developed similarly to the I'm an E-Girl Who Plays Video Games meme, as the tweet was widely criticized and parodied by people copying the text of the tweet and adding humorous examples.

Origin

On June 17th, 2021, Twitter user @deadboyshit[1] tweeted, "When a girl says she watches anime there’s a 90% chance this is what she means, along with four pictures of popular anime (shown below). The tweet received a ratio of 6,600 quote-tweets to 170 retweets.

The tweet spread widely thanks to a post from @SUGARMOUNTAINS,[2] who screenshot the tweet and posted, "men be like you ain’t a real anime fan unless you watch Is It Wrong To Piss On My Bunny Girl Sisters Feet," gaining over 6,900 retweets and 37,000 likes (shown below, left). On September 3rd, user @yungburgerpatty[3] reposted it, calling it the "funniest tweet on the site," gaining over 14,000 retweets and 111,000 likes (shown below, right).
