The line is a comedic misquotation of the expression and pun, "make like a tree and leave." The scene has spread as a GIF and reaction image online as early as 2018.

In mid-May 2026, the scene and quote became the subject of memes on X / Twitter, where the quote is further altered to make similar jokes using the phrasal template, "Make like a X and Y" or "Make like an X and Y." The memes were directly inspired by a December 2025 post reading, "why dontcha make like a pomni.. and start lookin for the exit," referencing The Amazing Digital Circus.

In one scene in Back to the Future Part II, antagonist Biff Tannen (played by actor Thomas F. Wilson) nearly gets into a fight with Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) at school. He grabs Marty by the shirt and raises his fist, then sees a teacher looking at them. Biff hesitates and then says, "Since you're new here, I'm gonna cut you a break. Today. So, why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?"

The scene was converted into a reaction image GIF and shared online as early as June 6th, 2018, when it was used in an article titled "Top 5 1980s Movie Villains" on the Fresh Retro Juice^[1] blog.

On December 11th, 2025, X^[2] user @PetuniaHTF_ posted a screenshot of the scene, writing, "why dontcha make like a pomni.. and start lookin for the exit," garnering over 21,000 likes and 3,400 reposts in five months.

In May 2026, the post inspired a wave of similar posts using the misquotation as a phrasal template. Many examples reference video games.

For example, on May 14th, 2026, X^[3] user @torturingleaf posted a version reading, "why dontcha make like a hello neighbor.. and get out," garnering over 20,000 likes in four days.

On May 15th, X^[4] user @Derek0f0nett posted a version reading, "Why dontcha make like an EarthBound…And go to your Mother," referencing the Japanese name of the Earthbound series, Mother, garnering over 11,000 likes in three days.
