The Wikipedia mascot trio is a group comprised of the Wikipedia 25th anniversary mascot Baby Globe and the two unofficial mascots Wikipe-tan and the Wikipede. The three were popularized on Twitter through a fan art trend in late September 2026.

Background

In late 2002, Wikipedia held a vote for if the site should have a mascot and what the mascot should be. One of the first suggestions was for it to be a centipede-like creature called the "Wikipede", which received the most votes out of all contenders. A character inspired by OS-tans called "Wikipe-tan" was later suggested in early 2006 and received the 3rd most votes. Both suggestions were given a design, with the Wikipede being depicted by Stevertigo as a green centipede with circular glasses and Wikipe-tan being depicted by Kasuga as a girl with teal twin tails in a dark blue hotel maid outfit. While no mascot was chosen, the Wikipede would later be officially used by the Wikimedia Foundation in a 2026 merch collection, though it uses a newer design by Theresa Knott from 2011, which depicts him as a brown, mustachioed centipede made of books. After the end of the contest, Wikipe-tan was used as the mascot of the Anime and Manga WikiProject and became the site's most popular unofficial mascot through her use within example images in Wikipedia's articles.

In late 2025, editor Jonathan Ferreira created a new Wikipedia mascot design, which was the Wikipedia logo with a face and light blue limbs. The character was given the name "Baby Globe" and was later officially introduced as the mascot of Wikipedia's 25th anniversary celebration in 2026.

Origin

On September 23rd, 2026, Twitter user Hxndr posted a tweet about the image used on Wikipedia's article for fan service, which is an illustration of Wikipe-tan's adult design wearing a pareo. The post gained over 905,000 views and 16,000 likes in 10 days.

After other tweets about Wikipe-tan and Baby Globe also went viral, user FlaminGingerBread made a post about all three of them on the 24th, writing, "the wikipedia mascot trio makes me very happy." The Tweet emassed over 2,700,000 views and 54,000 likes in 9 days.

Spread

On September 25th, artist Blek quote retweeted FlaminGingerBread to announce she was going to draw Wikipe-tan. When the art was posted, it garnered 10,000 views and 1,200 likes in 8 days.

After Blek's post, dozens of artists began quote retweeting FlaminGingerBread with their own art and designs of the three mascots. The most popular piece was posted by Suger Sting, which combined the Wikipe-tan, adult Wikipe-tan, and Wikipede's designs into one. The post reached over 1,000,000 views and 92,000 likes in 6 days.

Some other mascots not included in the tweet were also included in the art. These include Puzzly, an unofficial Wikimedia Commons mascot, Miwiki, an ant that placed 2nd in the mascot vote, and Kip, the name of Stevertigo's original Wikipede design. The normal and adult designs of Wikipe-tan were also occasionally depicted as separate people.
