About

"Yee" is an onomatopoeia taken from a video featuring an animated dinosaur specified as Ankylosaurus called Peek singing a small jingle, only to be interrupted at the end by a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Oro shouting Yee!. However, in English version, he says Peek!. Photoshopped images of the dinosaur began circulating in August 2014 after the video surfaced on Reddit.

Origin

On June 6, 2010, YouTuber Celyciah uploaded the peremptorily first source on the Internet, a shortcut clip titled Dinosauri antropomorfi dalle voci ambigue from the Italian version of animated film Dinosaur Adventure by Dingo Pictures, a low budget knockoff of the 1988 animated film The Land Before Time.[1] [2] The source video gained more than 350,000 views since its upload on YouTube.

Original transcript:

- Mamma e papa' hanno un nuovo bebe' e non se ne fanno piu' niente di te!
- Yee, come puoi dire una cosa simile, la maggior parte di noi fratelli o sorelle, i genitori amano tutti i figli allo stesso modo.

Translated transcript:

- Mom and Dad have got a new baby and they aren't doing anything to you anymore!
- Yee. how can you say something like that, the majority of us, brothers and sisters, the parents loves all their children in the same way.

On February 29, 2012, YouTuber revergo uploaded an edited version of the video with the title "Yee" accompanied with instrumentals from the movie itself. Within three years, the video gained over 2,000,000 views and 2600 comments.

Spread

The video remained relatively obscure until August 23, 2014, when it was submitted to the r/youtubehaiku subreddit, where it received more than 2,190 votes (93% upvoted) and 110 comments in the first two weeks.[3] The phrase "yee" was subsequently adopted by Tumblr users, who began posting fan art and photoshopped images of the dinosaurs from the video.[4]

2015 SBENU LoL Champions Spring Banner

On January 31, 2015, YouTube gaming channel TVOngamenet uploaded 2015 SBENU League of Legends Championships video material. After IM vs NaJin II competition, a Korean woman is seen holding a Yee sign with Oro's picture.
