About
Buhanka-Chan is a female shortstack anime character designed as an anthropomorphic representation of UAZ-452 "Buhanka" vans, notable for their use by the Russians during the 2022 Ukraine invasion. Buhanka-Chan is depicted with a Russian Z military symbol on her chest. Artwork depicting Buhanka-Chan alongside Kamaz-chan, a taller anime character representing another type of truck, was posted to 4chan in February 2022, inspiring further artwork depicting her in the following months.
Origin
On February 26th, 2022, an anonymous user of 4chan's[1] /ic/ (Artwork Critique) board posted an image of two anthropomorphic representations of Russian military vehicles, one tall and one a short stack character representing the UAZ-452 "Buhanka" vans, writing, "Thoughts?" (shown below). The thread inspired over 150 responses. The image was posted to Danbooru[2] that same day by user drawfag, who uploads art from anons on imageboards and to 4chan's /pol/[9] board.
Spread
On February 27th, 2022, the original piece of art was posted to /r/MoeMorphism,[6] gaining over 2,100 upvotes in a month. On March 4th, YouTuber[5] Topaz posted a video of Buhanka-Chan marching to "Soviet March 2," gaining over 4,100 views in a month (shown below). The original source of the video is unknown.
On March 5th, an anonymous 4chan /pol/[3] user posted a piece of art depicting Buhanka-Chan asking where she can refuel (shown below). It was reposted by Danbooru[4] user drawfag on March 9th.
On March 29th, an anonymous /k/[7] user posted a piece of art originally from 2ch showing a mechanic working on Buhanka-Chan, saying, "Everything is neglected here" (shown below). The art was uploaded to Danbooru[8] by drawfag that day.
