Origin

Around May 2023, images and a video circulating^[1] on social media became the subject of controversy and speculation, showing a girl with blonde hair appearing to engage in an explicit act, though they typically lead to bait videos in an attempt to get people to click on external links. The controversy, titled "La Oruga Hondureña" ("The Honduran Caterpillar" in English), was also believed to be a montage or a fake news video. YouTuber^[2] Yoga Time posted a clickbait video on May 18th, 2023, inviting people to click on a suspicious link to watch the original "oruga leaked video," which garnered over 6,000 views in five months.

The video primarily spread due to rumors that the girl in it was Honduran TikToker^[3] Katherine Barrera, though this appears to be a hoax. Under her nickname @soyloruga38 ("I'm the caterpillar" in English), Barrera purportedly became a digital sensation with her creativity and authenticity on TikTok unrelated to "The Honduran Caterpillar" video.^[6]

Spread

In early August 2023, the term “La Oruga 2.0 Video” became a prevalent topic on TikTok (primarily among Spanish-speaking users) where various TikTokers started to speculate that a new viral adult content video about @soyloruga38 had leaked on social media despite no confirmation of this.

For instance, on August 21st, 2023, the TikTok^[4] page @replayvideoo posted a clickbait video saying it had the original video of "la oruga" that was going around (shown below, left), which garnered over 26,000 plays and 540 likes in a day. On August 8th, TikToker^[5] @liyusanx2 posted a series of pictures of @soyloruga38 with a Google Search bar overlaid with the text "lysuan" (shown below, right), which received roughly 542,000 plays and 23,000 likes in two weeks.

Continuing into late August 2023, numerous videos referencing “La Oruga 2.0” furthering the rumored association of the explicit viral video with TikToker @soyloruga38 spread on TikTok as search interest surrounding the controversy increased (examples shown below).^[7]

Additionally, many videos on YouTube attempting to bait people into watching their videos appeared on the platform around late August 2023 (examples seen below).
