Don't You Lecture Me With Your 30 Dollar Haircut refers to a series of memes based on screenshots of a message containing the catchphrase followed by a certain emoji or emoji combination spammed approximately a hundred times. In memes, each of the emojis is dubbed with a humorous sound effect that's selected depending on the emoji. In January 2022, a sequencer for the meme that allowed for creatively arranging a choice of sound effects was launched by TheRealGDColon, gaining virality.

Origin

On July 11th, 1992, the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, the seventh installation in the Dragon Ball Z film series, premiered. In 2008, an English dub of the anime was released by Funimation.^[1] At the 19:36 mark in the dubbed version, the villain Android 13, voiced by Doug Rand, tells the character Trunks not to lecture him "with his 30 dollar haircut" (video shown below).

Prior to September 2020, the phrase saw moderate recognition online, primarily in the form of clips of the Funimation English dub of Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! being posted online. For example, on November 19th, 2012, YouTuber^[2] Hivnom posted the video, with the clip gaining over 50,000 views in nine years. On September 27th, 2017, YouTuber^[3] Suruga Devil posted a compilation of clips from the 2008 dubbed version that received over 2.5 million views in four years.

On September 19th, 2020, Twitter^[4] user @iwakeupDP posted a screenshot of the description of a channel named 🗿 on an unknown Discord server. The description contained the phrase "DON'T YOU LECTURE ME WITH YOUR THIRTY DOLLAR HAIRCUT," followed by 121 Moyai (🗿) emojis. The post received 38 retweets and 270 likes in 10 months (image and tweet shown below, left and right).

Later on the same day, @iwakeupDP tweeted^[5] a video version of the meme, with each of the 121 🗿 emojis dubbed with the Vine Thud Effect and the voice line from the English dub used. The video received over 41,300 views, 1,600 retweets and 3,700 likes in 10 months (shown below).

Spread

The video version of the meme received viral spread online with multiple reposts on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. For example, on November 15th, YouTuber^[6] TheToaMaster reposted the video, with the reupload gaining over 108,000 views in nine months. On January 11th, 2021, Twitter^[7] user @Distorto54 tweeted the video, with the repost gaining over 44,000 views and 1,600 retweets and 6,500 likes in six months.

The meme did not see spread until June 9th, 2021, when iFunny^[8] user Oramj posted a clip from the 2011 episode "Cool Bikes" of the Regular Show animated series combined with a comment made by iFunny user bilee. Identical to @iwakeupDP's meme, each of the Moyai emojis was dubbed with a Vine Thud. The meme was featured on the app and received over 37,000 smiles in two months (shown below, left).

On June 10th, 2021, iFunny^[9] user tylers_box posted a version of the meme with the original caption, with guitar emojis replacing the Moyai emojis and the emojis dubbed with the electric guitar riff from the episode. The post received over 28,000 smiles in two months (shown below, right).

On June 13th, 2021, another iFunny^[10] user posted a version of the meme based on a comment to the tyler_box's post made by iFunny user lilnotfun. The meme gained over 28,700 smiles in two months (shown below, left).

Starting on June 13th, multiple memes utilizing the format, both based on iFunny comments and created independently, were posted on the app. For example, on June 14th, iFunny^[11] user DoctorTerror posted a version that received over 480 smiles in two months (shown below, right).

Following the viral spread on iFunny, the format spread through reposts to YouTube^[12][13] and then to Twitter, with several viral versions posted in July 2021. A version in which character Heavy from Team Fortress 2 performs "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers gained particular popularity.^[13]

Generator

On January 26th, 2022, programmer^[14] @TheRealGDColon launched Don't You Lecture Me With Your Dollar Website,^[15] a sequencer for the meme that allowed for creatively arranging a choice of sound effects represented by images they are associated with.

30 Dollar Particle Accelerator refers to a series of memes in which a certain sound effect is being played at an increasingly higher speed, eventually turning into a loud monotonous hum. Created with TheRealGDColon's Don't You Lecture Me With Your 30 Dollar Haircut sequencer, the format achieved virality on YouTube in August 2023.
