Tana Mongeau is an American musician and YouTuber known for her "story time" videos and her failed attempt to host the YouTuber convention "TanaCon".

Online History

On April 30th, 2015, Mongeau joined YouTube and uploaded he first video, "Hairdresser From Hell?" on May 15th (shown below, left). The video gained upwards of three million views in four years. As of February 2019 her most popular upload has been her music video for her single "Hefner" featuring her girlfriend Bella Thorne uploaded on November 6th, 2017 (shown below, right). The video has garned over 13 million views and 236,000 likes in two years. Her channel has accumulated 3.8 million subscribers and 510 million views in four years.

Music Career

Tana Mongeau began her rap/hip-hop debut with the release of her single, "Hefner." Mongeau collaborated with Lil Phag and Dr. Woke on a song titled "Deadahh" that was released on December 15, 2017 (shown below, left). She released her second solo single, "W", on March 1, 2018 (shown below, right). The "W" music video has garnered 6,111,776 views and 130,000 likes in a year. Her third solo single, "F**k Up", was released on August 31, 2018.

iDubbbz Controversy

On December 10th, 2016, YouTube vlogger Tana Mongeau posted a series of tweets slamming iDubbbz for using the "n-word" and "retard" in his videos. (shown below).

While iDubbbz didn't publicly acknowledge her criticism, he responded by staging an elaborate stunt wherein he traveled to San Francisco to attend a VIP meet-and-greet event with Mongeau, during which he approached the celebrity vlogger for a photograph and blurted out "say nigger!" (shown below, left). iDubbbz was promptly kicked out of the event. The prank was also recorded on camera by his girlfriend and fellow vlogger Raihnbowkidz, which was eventually posted to iDubbbz' secondary channel in early February (shown below, right).

On January 24th, 2017, Mongeau, unaware of the identity of the prankster, recounted her unpleasant encounter with a mysterious intruder at her event in a video titled "The N Word" (shown below). Within 24 hours, the video racked up more than 1.2 million views. Meanwhile, some of her fans began sleuthing online in order to identify the agent provocateur, which ultimately resulted in the exposure of iDubbbz' involvement.

However, the tide of the feud took an unexpected and drastic turn later that same day, when a video clip of Mongeau aggressively yelling the phrase "you fucking nigger" surfaced on YouTube. The video has since been removed. On January 26th, YouTube personality Philip DeFranco uploaded a video to share his thoughts on the controversy (shown below, right). On January 27th, Redditor Filterg submitted a post chronicling several times Mongeau had used the slur in the past to /r/idubbbz.^[2]

On February 6th, iDubbbz released a new Content Cop episode criticizing Mongeau's video for exaggerating their encounter in San Francisco, as well as her use of the same racial slur in the past (shown below, left). Within 24 hours, the video gained over 3.5 million views and 158,000 comments. Same day, Redditor AsianWithGlasses submitted the Content Cop video to /r/videos,^[3] where it gained over 174,000 votes (66% upvoted) and 7,100 comments within 24 hours.

In response to the revelations about her own past, Mongeau tweeted that she had "made a lot of mistakes" and "an apology will be coming soon" (shown below).

TanaCon

TanaCon was a convention launched by YouTuber Tana Mongeau as an alternative to the YouTube conference VidCon in late June 2018. After an unexpected amount of attendees arrived, the event was abruptly canceled due to safety concerns.

On June 28th, Shane Dawson released a video titled "The Truth About Tanacon," in which he discussed the history of the convention (shown below, left). The following day, a second video about the event was released, titled "The Truth About Tana Mongeau" (shown below, right).

On July 2nd, 2018, Dawson released the final video in the series titled "The Real Truth About Tanacon" (shown below). Over the next week, the videos accumulated upwards of 10.6 million, 9.7 million and 7.1 million views respectively.

In the series, Dawson and Mongeau accuse 21-year-old entrepreneur Michael Weist of failing to organize the convention properly. Additionally, Dawson claims that all the revenues from ticket sales for the event were being held by the ticketing startup Veeps and that Weist is responsible for compensating attendees.

Twitch Account

On March 23rd, 2018, Tana Mongeau tweeted the question "can u do things on twitch other than game? like what if i wanted to do a haul lmao." The tweet gained 130 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below). Many users criticized her ignorance and claimed that she would probably get banned.

On February 7th, 2019, Mongeau began streaming to Twitch. YouTuber XQCentraL uploaded a clip of her stream to YouTube which gained over 2,000 views in the first two days (shown below, left). Many Redditors criticized Mongeau's choice to begin streaming to Twitch as it is a traditionally a gamer's platform. On February 8th, YouTuber Twitch Fails featured Mongeau in the video called "A New Cancer has Arrived on Twitch" (shown below, right). Her Twitch channel has gained 3,400 subscribers in six days.^[1]

OnlyFans Site

On May 23rd, 2020, Mongeau announced "Tana Uncensored," an OnlyFans page that would host nude photos and videos of the influencer. She wrote, "TANA UNCENSORED IS HERE. LINK IN BIO TO SEE ME IN A WAY YOU TRULY NEVER HAVE BEFORE.. and we’re just getting started round here 😈 Y’ALL KNOW I WASN’T GONNA FUMBLE THE ONLY FANS BAG. @ashlyschwan we shoulda gotten naked sooner i fwu."

Less than an hour after launch, she tweeted that she could not broadcast live streams due to the influx of users. She wrote, "YALL BROKE THE SITE I CANT EVEN GO LIVE RN WERE ON THE FUCKING PHONE WITH THEM!!!! BREAKING RECORDS……… hold up but just know the first live will be iconic."
