Yeah this was from a point in time when Nintendo's Gamecube sales were lower than expected so they were kinda trying hard to appeal to "teh hardcorez gamerz!" but sorta came off sounding like "the parent who tries to be hip in the wrong ways." Around the time the Wii launched they switched gears to "wide audience" appeal by trying to please both the "core" and "casual" gamer crowds since prior to that gen the casual crowd wasn't really one that was catered to, so they were an untapped market.

They've switched gears again though, as they know the casual market's shifted to mobile, so now they have a dedicated mobile team for more casual focused software and their console teams focus more on appealing to the core gamer crowd, along with Nintendo once again being more open to publishing "mature" rated software like Bayonetta 2 and The Devil's Third (something they haven't done since the gamecube era with games like Eternal Darkness and Geist).
