The primary image used in the meme is one of a bat being cleaned with a toothbrush. <h2>Origin</h2> On January 28th, 2008, <a href=http://www.facebook.com/mandifruitbat>Mandi Griffith</a> created a Facebook Photo Album called <a href=http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=391275&id=651242217#/photo.php?pid=391275&id=651242217&fbid=8596592217>Baby Bats</a>. One photo in particular, of a baby bat named Rubberlegs with the caption, “Rubberlegs enjoying a brush with his blue toothbrush” was also added to the public Facebook group <a href=http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=photos&gid=2204506524>Bats!!!</a>, which featured a collection of 95 user-sourced bat photos. It’s not entirely clear who was first to take the photo from the Facebook Group, but it was posted in a few different blogs before becoming 4chan’s “Brushie Brushie Brushie” meme. The site had violated a law signed by President Bill Clinton a year earlier which states: <blockquote> Whoever knowingly creates, sells, or possesses a depiction of animal cruelty with the intention of placing that depiction in interstate or foreign commerce for commercial gain, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both. </blockquote> The tongue-in-cheek nature of the website gave the FBI enough justification to treat the matter as a federal felony.
