It is a very common phrase and an image macro when someone said or discovered something already obvious and well known. Its use are similar to the ‘Captain Obvious’ meme.

The catchphrase is a refrence to the ever popular 19 – century detective Sherlock Holmes created by the author Connan Doyle that starred in many of his books and their movie ataptations

Usually Sherlock was the one to make stunning discoveries and the one who solves the mystery.
But since then, the term was taken the other way around in a humorous way: when someone thinks he made a discovery but it is in fact already well known, and all the others will mock him as though he tried to take the role of the famous detective and failed.
The catchphrase is popular due to its synical mocking manner and the fact that both words ‘shit’ and ‘Sherlock’ start with SH that makes the phrase easily roll out of the tounge

Example: -" you know I just found out that people die when they are killed"
-“no shit, Sherlock!”

Possible Origin

One of the earlier uses of the term is from the original ending of the 1986 film Little Shop of Horrors.

This is indeed a popular catchphrase. My qualm is that I’m 95% sure it did not originate in the internet, so it might not be technically an internet meme. On the other hand, it has seen spread inside the internet community. Therefore, let’s see how this one develops.
