About

Risk of Rain is a 2D rougelike video game with repandomized elements. In the game, the player controls the survivor of a space freighter crash on a strange planet and must progress through levels to escape, attempting to survive by killing monsters and collecting items. The game has gained a cult following of fans, spawning various memes and pieces of fan art.

History

Risk of Rain was created by a two-student team Duncan Drummond and Paul Morse, later releasing the game under the Hopoo Games. Following the successful kickstarter in May 2013, the game was released on November 8, 2013 to very positive reviews on the Steam platform.



Sequel

Following the success of the original game, on May 8th, 2017, Hopoo Games announced on a tumblr post that Risk of Rain 2 was under development. The game was launched on steam in early access on March 28th, 2019 to overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, along with numerous praise from game critics.



Overloading Magma Worm

In the original Risk of Rain, the Overloading Magma Worm,an elite version of a regular Magma Worm, was considered one of the strongest enemies in the game, being able to kill even the strongest players in mere moments. The strength of the enemy spawned various memes about it.

Funballs

One of the game-modifying artifacts players can unlock is the Spite artifact, which when active causes enemies to drop exploding spheres on death. Named ‘funballs’ by the community, the destructive power of the explosives gave way to various images about the phenomenon.
