NBC announces animated David S. Pumpkins Halloween special
Leave it Saturday Night Live to take something fun and amusing and run it right into the ground.
When SNL introduced David S. Pumpkins, the indelible mischief maker of Halloween played by America’s Dad Tom Hanks, last October, a satisfied nation sighed and said, “Well, that was a fun little trifle. Now, on to other things.” After an exchange of GIFs from the skit, a handful of fan art illustrations and Halloween costumes, America moved on.
But SNL had other plans.
Yesterday, Deadline reported that SNL is teaming up again with Hanks to resurrect David S. Pumpkins for one more night of spoopy fright in a half-hour animated Halloween special in October. That’s right, the viral SNL sketch, where the joke is that the sketch is… stupid, will fill 22 minutes of air time with a whole lot of Tom Hanks saying "I'm David Pumpkins."
In case you somehow missed it, the special revolved around David S. Pumpkins, a pumpkin-suited Tom Hanks, and his two skeleton-dressed dancers, as they desperately try to frighten a couple on a "haunted elevator" ride by simply saying his own name as his cohorts make baby noises. It's funny, but four minutes is about all we can take of it.
"It’s scary how quickly the original SNL sketch caught on, and we’re thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going,"said George Cheeks, President, Business Operations and Late Night Programming, NBC Entertainment and Universal Television, who clearly hates his audience or something.
Set in a suburban town on the eve of Halloween, the upcoming sketch will star Tom Hanks in his reprised role as David S. Pumpkins, along with SNL cast members Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan as his dancing skeleton buddies, who try to explain the true meaning of Halloween to a young boy and his sister, but end up baffling them once again, because the joke is… stupid. In addition to Hanks, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage will guest star as a new character.
Now that we’re staring down the barrel of an entire special of someone screaming “I’m David Pumpkins” with skeletons dancing behind him, it's worth asking ourselves: Where does the human race go from here? Should we retreat into ourselves and admit defeat? Do we write our senators and ask them to please stop this? Nope. We go on Twitter and complain about it.
David S. Pumpkins is the stupidest character ever. I stand strong in this opinion. Don't @ me.

it's a relief SNL can be counted on to do a mildly funny thing every decade & immediately run it into the ground https://t.co/BAk9sFb8hd

However, some people just want enjoy something simple again. Can you blame them? With news reports of possible nuclear extinction on the horizon every other week, maybe Tom Hanks is just what we need to quell the unease of cold war.
