Chapter 4: Leave Self-Creation Alone, Amor Fati I have offered thoughts on what context amor fati is to be taken in, which just hints at the problem it will pose for self-creation. This is a problem that is met with some fierce debate in the literature as to how far Nietzsche believed you are free to consciously self-create, how this conflicts with eternal recurrence, and how far any solution should favour one over the other. Before looking into this, however, we should make sure we are familiarised with what self-creation is. To attempt any understanding of the debate without settling on this would be crazy, and a wasted effort. It is the notion that we are free to shape our character, but through what means and to what degree this is possible is up for grabs. Here's the idea that through my choices and force of will 1 am able to alter my own identity and personality. Inevitably, of course, there are going to be a number of limiting factors to this process, and it is in this that philosophers get so worked up. One factor is the idea that we possess default traits, which I will call natural disposition, which are hard to overcome. One such character trait for me, for example, may be the inclination to seek validation from my peers. And maybe this can be unlearnt, but it is not immediately obvious. Other such limiting factors include social conditioning and biological limitations. The idea that we behave in certain manners because of social conditioning is represented by Nietzsche as our true nature being repressed under the confines of conventional morality, and it is this factor that he believes need not be limiting at all, but can in fact be overcome by way of his revaluation コMUSIC.FAILBLOG.ORG
