Lucy tries to be nice ONE TIME
![Published August 2, 1979.
Peanuts had a story arc in the Summer of 1979 that spanned the course of several weeks. In short, Charlie Brown is hospitalized. We get all sorts of interesting bits from this storyline, including CB's canon age (8 and a half), him worrying about dying, Peppermint Patty and Marcie sitting outside of the hospital in solidarity, Marcie announcing her love for "Chuck," and Lucy being surprisingly worried for him.
Lucy promises herself one evening that if Charlie Brown gets better, she won't do the football gag again. Naturally, Linus is there to witness the promise and Charlie Brown recovers about two days later.
The best part about this comic is that it's an enormous brick joke. When Violet pulled the football for the first time in 1951, it was because she was scared of her hand getting kicked. And over 27 years later, the joke finally came to pass.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/650/033/e01.jpg)

1965 Version
![With these old Peanuts Sunday comics, it's important to note that many publications would actually cut out the first row of panels. This is why the top row typically focuses on the title, telling a brief gag, and/or doing some extra setting up for the main joke.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/650/009/688.jpg)
