Serious A couple years ago I befriended my coworker, lets call him Jeff, a nice dude who has cerebral palsy. Jeff and I bonded over our love for the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, and also various anime we both liked. Jeff and I have been great friends and we often talked about how we wished we could make our own animated series, but we never really had the tools, money, and honestly artistic skill. Then came the past summer when a bunch of AI image generators started coming out. Jeff and I were both amazed by this and loved playing around with them. The technology has continued progressing over the past few months and Jeff & I had generated some character designs we both thought were cool. Jeff especially loved using this AI a creative outlet as it's always been harder for him to create stuff with his hand issues. So Jeff brought up again how we could use this to make an animated series, and I was all for it. So we both started working on writing scripts for a sort of fantasy/wild west themed series. While this series is mostly for our own enjoyment, Jeff & I still wanted to upload our work to YouTube. So far, we had been generating character designs, cleaning them up with photoshop, and begun some animation with Adobe Animate. Then Jeff began posting some of our progress onto a Twitter account he made. Not long after he started posting on the account, a lot of responses and hate started coming in. People started calling us "art thieves", "stealing from starving artists","creatively bankrupt", and so on and so on basically just calling us and our work horrible. Our account publicly stated we relied on AI, and we didn't plan to profit off of our videos. Eventually the hate was just too overwhelming and we deleted the account. So, Are my friend and I the buttfaces? We had no plans to try to make money from this thing, but people still said we were awful for even using AI generations. 2 points . 7 comments [

35 minutes ago At this point I'm really concerned that the anger from artists could lead to pressure to reform copyright laws to cover styles. Large companies would be very delighted to help such push monetarely as it would ensure cheap monopoly over art wheter it produced by humans or Al. The only way to technically even trying to counter this at the moment is by training an army of Al bots scanning content submitted to anywhere taking down anything which fits close enough of trained style data set. Al Art Al-generated art is not allowed in the Art Portal. This includes using tools such as Midjourney, Dall- E, and CrAlyon, in addition fractal generators and websites like ArtBreeder, where the user selects two images and they are combined into a new image via machine learning. There are cases where some use of Al is ok, for example if you are primarily showcasing your character art but use an Al-generated background. In these cases, please note any elements where Al was used so that it is clear to users and moderators. Tracing and coloring over Al-generated art is something best shared on your blog, as it is much like tracing over someone else's art. Making art from scratch that is inspired by an Al piece is ok. Here are two good examples: Maiden of Flames and Hermin. Both pieces reference the Al art they are based on while being original pieces in their own right. Bottom line: We want to keep the focus on art made by people and not have the Art Portal flooded with computer-generated art.
