Sonic and MLP universes have a variety of aspects extremely appealing to the social outcast, autistic man, and those who seek to simply escape. In both universes, not only are there lots of different people (making a self-insert more plausible) but everyone has clearly defined roles and aspects of Character. This is even more profound in MLP, by instance of a "beauty mark" that denotes the primary facet of that character. To people who find the complexity of reality, where subtext and irony are abundant, a much simpler existence where people ARE what they are and you can see very easily what they are helps. Next is the fact that these are both universes where friendship is important. They work together, there is very little natural conflict and what there is resolved quickly in an episode/comic/whatever. This is an incredibly misguided attempt by the writers to tell children that you should try and work past problems with friends and family. This is true, but it is also thoroughly unrealistic to expect all problems to be resolved in a short time with a simple solution, and for everything to be okay most of the time. This causes people who like these things to take refuge in Kingdom Hearts and Sonic the Hedgehog, because the real world has friends who aren't very friendly, people who aren't what you think they'd be. To a brony, these excuses of good writing are desperate attempts to escape the truth: that they cannot live in our world, so they will try to live in a fantasy
