Do game jams or prototypes with engines you're not using in production. Keep your options open. Try new workflows. There's a ton of amazing #gamedev tech out there. Game developers, especially those of you who were active in the late 1970s and 1980s: I wanted to make you aware of something that happened in the collectible game community, the goal of which is to get game developers-particularly developers of games from the late 1970s and 1980s-to donate or gift their development notes or rare games to a private collector who was, in turn, suspected of using this material for personal financial gain and, in some cases, to allegedly counterfeit these games for resale. As the prices of collectible games escalate, we expect this problem to grow. As I am sure you know, your development notes, disks, source code, art, and game-related items have both historical and financial value. Should you choose to donate them, there are many chartered museums like The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester or collections like those at the University of Texas at Austin or Stanford University in California which will give them a good home and make them available to future researchers. If you choose to sell them, there are many ways to do that as well, as I am sure you know. Concern was raised after discovering that a game collector was befriending multiple game developers, encouraging people to send him their notes, and then, in at least a few documented cases, was allegedly producing counterfeit copies of games, including one with a suspected forged copy of a developer's autograph. It's a long con, and the collector is friendly, a super fan, and works to gain the trust of the target with hopes that this trust will be repaid in the donation of development materials or, at the very least, an original edition of an early game. There is an excellent article on Ars Technica as well as a detailed analysis and reporting linked in the thread below. Please consider: • If you choose to donate your materials, please consider donating to a reputable, chartered museum that will make these materials available for future generations of researchers. ● If you are asked for hi-res scans of your development materials, please be aware that these may be used to produce fraudulent copies of the game. ● If a game collector approaches you as a fan of your early work, be aware that they may have a specific goal in mind which goes beyond just reaching out to say they're your fan.
