That its shaping of public thought, culture, opinion and behaviour was an important aspect of modern democratic society. The mass public, the "mob", could not be relied upon to think for themselves or move society, or in particular vote, in the "right" direction. And so cadres of guiding men should use public relations and propaganda as a kind of "enlightened despotism to direct the masses in ways they 'should' go An underlying philosophy of the article is that the critics of video games have a similar "duty" to critice, direct, and ultimately guide gamers and video games down a more 'enlightened' path We Should Expect this Idea to be alluded to in the coming series of articles this month Game journalists see themselves as the 'enlightened depots' of gaming culture and discussion. Their attacks on gamers, their constant accusations of misogyny, and above all their censorship is justified as they are 'cleaning up' a morally degenerate or at best unaware hobby. The are agents of improvement, and their own corruption, cronyism, intimidation, and exploitation is natually to be ignored or justified by the ends This point is unlikely to be stated directly, but I suspect it will serve as a ideological basis for many articles which appear.
