The account, which generated wide-scale press mentions including on the Reuters wire masked the identity of its owner and disparaged a publicly traded company over a possible SEC violation. As a Reuters journalist, you should be guided 24 hours a day by the ethics of our organization as embodied in the Code of Conduct and the Trust Principles, which require you to be responsible, fair and impartial. Reuters does not endorse or condone the use of parody accounts for our social media efforts. As our Social Media Policy makes clear, we have no desire to muzzle our journalists' use of social media However, when dealing with matters of public importance and actual or potential subjects of coverage you should be mindful of the impact that your publicly expressed opinions can have on your work and on Reuters. You should have identified yourself as a Reuters journalist and indicated that you were speaking for yourself, not for Thomson Reuters. Although you eventually revealed yourself to be the creator of the account, this series of actions displayed a serious lapse of judgment and professionalism that is unbecoming of a Reuters journalist. The actions violated several key principles of the Reuters Handbook of Journalism (http://handbook.reuters.com/index.php/Main Page) and our Social Media Policy Reuters journalists are never to misrepresent themselves. The creation of a fake account that did not identify you as the author clearly violates our Social Media Policy. The parody account, which disparages a public figure, also undermines our goal to provide an unbiased and reliable news service to our clients. And you failed to alert a manager before taking such unprecedented action. Furthermore, the fake account embarrassed our News reporting team and has possibly damaged our relationship with a company that we have covered aggressively For these reasons, we are issuing this final written warning. We must see immediate improvement in your communications with managers and more discretion in your social media practices Failure to adhere to these expectations may lead to termination Regards Kenneth Li
