"What isn't usually brought up in western discussions about the Second World War or as the Russians sometimes refer to it 'the great patriotic war' is not only the scale of the fighting in the eastern theater of the war, but also the heinous atrocities committed by both the Nazis and the Soviets. The war on the eastern front, in terms of the amount of combatants involved, munitions expended, equipment used, and casualties sustained simply dwarfed what the Americans and British had experienced in the Western Europe and North Africa. Furthermore what are often also neglected are discussions of Hitler's views on Slavic peoples and the consequences of the Nazi policy of Lebensraum on these peoples. Lebensraum was a very oppressive policy towards Slavs and is comparable to the treatment of Jews, Romani, Communists, and homosexuals under the Nazis. Meanwhile on the Soviet side there were multiple instances during the late war and immediate occupation of German civilians being murdered in cold blood, mass looting, and the r--- of German women and girls. It truly was the largest and most violent clashes of conflicting ideologies, cultures, and militaries that human kind has ever seen. What best captures the animosity between these people is this photograph taken during the Soviet occupation of Eastern Germany (most likely in 1945) where we can see a Red Army private reading a copy of Maxim Gorky's The Mother (Russian: Mamb) while callously resting on the frozen corpse of a Volkstrum soldier whose face is forever frozen in the expression of pain that it held when he was killed.
