9 days ago If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. Hands down, the weirdest experience I've ever had at a restaurant. Definitely the dumbest conversation I've had thus far in 2020, and honestly, I'm partly to blame because I actually engaged with their stupidity. I have no idea how you run an establishment with the kind of awful and combatant attitude the waiter and manager treat their patrons with at the Port Washington Diner. I politely asked the waiter if I could get the Bagel Deluxe without the lox and he replied back saying, "No, it's a Bagel Deluxe. It comes with the lox." Below is the rest of our asinine exchange over a stupid bagel. Me: I can't have it without the lox?? Him: Without the lox, it's not a Bagel Deluxe. Me: Yes but I don't want the lox...Can't I substitute it? Him: I don't know what to tell you. No one has ever asked this before. You go to any diner and a Bagel Deluxe will come with the lox. It's like asking for a burger without the patty. What do you want? Me: Can't you just put any other meat in place of it? Him: It comes with the lox. Me: No other meat you can put in there instead? Him: No. Me: That doesn't make any sense... Him: Well, what do you want? Me: The bagel without the lox and turkey bacon instead? He writes it down. At this point, I'm staring at this man trying to understand why I just spent 5 minutes of my life discussing the sanctity of a Bagel Deluxe and how without the lox, it's not a Bagel Deluxe. Why does he feel so strongly? Does he think it's French for Bagel..De Lox?? Is that what he thought? Who hit this man on the head and why is he fighting with me over lox?! For God's sake and for the sake of perspective and common sense, I'm at the town diner...and it has a 10-page menu where every other item has something with a different kind of meat in it...and it's too much to ask for one of those meats to be put in place of the lox? He ultimately did do the substitution so why the back and forth and the resistance to accommodate your customer for something as simple as replacing lox with something else?? Was the lox gorilla-glued to the bagel?? Was it baked within the bagel?? Why are we fighting about lox?! I'm not trying to be difficult! I just want a bagel sans lox. Sans an argument. I'm willing to pay for it! I promise! | Anyways, he takes the menu back from me but not without the drama of snatching it from my hand. Clearly, he was personally offended that I dare taint his glorious Bagel "De Lox" with common turkey. I was so put off by his smug, condescending, difficult and aggressive attitude that I got up to complain to the manager. Turns out the manager is cut from the same cloth. I found out that he too had pledged the Bagel "De Lox" pledge when he said to me, "Why didn't you just get something else off the menu? You don't like the lox? Don't get the Bagel Deluxe. It's the Bagel Deluxe. Without the lox, it's not the Bagel Deluxe." It's like his brain was short-circuiting too because of the same request... He ends with, "Usually at a restaurant, you order whatever is on the menu." To which I replied, "Usually at a restaurant, you're a little more accommodating to a customer's simple request and a little less aggressive." When I asked him his name, do you want to know what this thick-headed vegetable for a human told me? "I don't have a name." He, who does not have a name, defending what he truly believes in: a bagel with lox, and lox ONLY. That's his cause for 2020. I obviously left after this altercation. It was like having a conversation with an eggplant. Two eggplants actually, disguised as grown men. I'm obviously not a saint so I didn't leave without giving a middle finger to the law of Bagel "De Lox." I'm sorry I'm not sorry. Somebody..anybody..if you have a little sympathy for my experience and what I had to go through just to order a simple bagel for breakfast, please order a Bagel Deluxe and ask for it without the lox. Do it in person or call and ask for the manager (the one without the name) and order it. It's so stupid that it's comical to watch them have a nervous breakdown when you ask them to imagine the horror of a lox-less bagel. The horror!!! O Funny 4 O Useful 3 Cool
