Anita Sarkeesian's "Values and Concepts of Normalcy" One of Anita Sarkeesian's more controversial statements is: We must remember that games don't just entertain. Intentional or not, they always express a set of values and present us with concepts of normalcy. It's easy to show that, taken in one sense, this is false. But in another sense it seems true. I thought it was worth remarking on this, because it is a TRICK that Anita makes use of. Ayn Rand is very fond of this same trick; those of you who know her, will recognize it in action. Anita's statement is ambiguous. It may be read in at least two senses. In Sense 1, it is true but trivial. In Sense 2, it is important but false SENSE 1 is that games "express values and concepts of normalcy" in the way any kind of stories do. In other words, it amounts to the claim "stories are stories" or "stories do the things that stories do." This is, as I noted, true but trivial. Of course stories are stories and do story things. SENSE 2 is that the stories presented by games have a profound and powerful impact on those who behold them, even a little bit, and have the power to brainwash, condition, or fundamentally alter a person's attitudes and beliefs, with the mildest amount of exposure. This is an interesting and serious claim; it is also not true. It is important but false. THE TRICK is this: When Anita needs to argue her thesis is true, she appeals to the true but trivial sense. Alright! Time to write a female character for my video game! Hmm, alright. Let's see I guess I can't Make her a villain, because that means that I would be portraying women in a negative misogynous tone Make her overly attractive because I would be perpetuating the stereotype that only attractive women are heroic. This would also promote sexual objectification of women. Make her ugly because then I'd be saying that only unattractive women can get things done I'd also make unattractive women feel bad instead of empowering them - Make her the sidekick of a male character, because that would imply that she's subservient to his whims, and that she is not equal. Make her the sidekick of a female character because that would imply that women cannot work together, or that one is more equal to the other 剭 Make her the hero, because that would just be a male 'fantasy'. Having her kick ass and win the day would just be enforcing negative stereotypes. - Make her strong and willful and muscular because that would mean I'm just making a male character with breasts. which women find offensive since it rejects femininity Make her girly, feminine and sensitive, because that would mean that women cannot be strong, independent and powerful. Make a female character at all because no matter what I do, feminists will ALWAYS bitch about any aspect they can dig out of the box, because it is their hobby and that's what they do for a living, claiming to be oppressed by the "patriarchy" while women in a few 3rd world countries are truly subjected to discrimination SOLUTION: Something like the examples provided below: (The legend of the last princess) (Towel Fall) (Sword & Sworcery) (Beyond Good and Evil) I'm not entirely sure what makes these characters stick out as positive in terms of their roles and designs, but these female characters are actually seen as positive even by those normally thought to be unpleasable. We should analyze/study them so we can figure out what makes them not offensive to feminists. Then perhaps it would be easier to create female characters who are innovative and progressive in terms of designs and portrayal for better female representation in video games It is possible to make non-offensive female video game characters; you just need to try harder Never underestimate the creativity the human mind is capable of and don't be afraid to think outside the box. There is no need to change the characters we already have, but maybe it's time try to create new kinds of characters for a modern audience regardless. But if you wish to create your own characters your own way for your own personal project and design them the way you want: That's fine, no one can stop you. u create something for everyone, you s hould do exactly that. We reported recently on how experts are vulnerable to an overclaiming error - falsely feeling familiar with things that seem true of a domain but aren't. Now a new paper in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology explores how feelings of expertise can lead us to be more dogmatic towards new ideas I'M AN EXPERT ON THE DEPICTIONS OF WOMEN IN VIDEO GAMES Victor Ottati at Loyola University and his colleagues manipulated their student participants to feel relative experts or novices in a chosen field, through easy questions like "Who is the current President of the United States?" or tough ones like "Who was Nixon's initial Vice-President?" and through providing feedback to enforce the participants' feelings of knowledge or ignorance. Those students manipulated to feel more expert subsequently acted less open-minded toward the same topic, as judged by their responses to items such as l am open to considering other political viewpoints." "Not listening ." People's perceptions of their all-round expertise provoked in the students via an easy rather than a hard trivia quiz- also led them to display a close-mindedness in general, even though it was the participants who took the hard quiz who failed more, and reported feeling more insecure, irritable and negative - ingredients that are normally associated with close-mindedness. This isn't to say that these emotional states didn't have any effect, just thatse-mindedness. This igt ins, imtable and t was swamped by perceptions of expertise.
