It causes people to move towards tribalism which threatens our social fabric. For instance, I have been banned from both a right wing subreddit and a left wing sub for simply trying to have a conversation about right and left wing subjects. That kind of moderation may drive up usage because people's views are never challenged and they don't have to consider another person's position.
