Censorship and reddit
![[Meta] This subverse represents the anger stage in the natural grieving process (self.MeanwhileOnReddit submitted 1 hour ago by SuperConductiveRabbi 12 I've seen a lot of comments in /N/meanwhileonreddit from confused users, who ask "why don't you just ignore Reddit? Can we please just stop talking about them now?" I want to reply and explain why I think this subverse has value, but I decided to do it in a self post instead Reddit is dead. Many of us loved Reddit, and were with it for a long time. When the recent changes started happening, perhaps you were like me, and had trouble letting go. You reasoned that the changes Ellen Pao announced could just as easily be reversed once some better leader steps in, and that the leader could also work to resolve the cancer that has infested even the crevices of that site and which has been left unchecked for a year or two. We saw the disease in Reddit and speculated that it could be excised, leaving Reddit as it once was--that Reddit was alive and healthy underneath the festering bits, and if someone in power could just cut them out, it could once again thrive and be the site we once loved. This was the denial stage I believe that /v/meanwhileonreddit is the anger stage. A person who is wholly unconcerned with the fate of Reddit would not care to poke fun at them, or observe them and shake their heads. They would already have moved on; they would already spend their Internet time elsewhere on Voat, participating in fledgling communities and rarely giving a thought to the site they came from. You might argue with this, and say that you're doing it just in good fun (and don't get me wrong: I like v/meanwhileonreddit--I find it cathartic). However, consider this: if you came from Slashdot before Reddit, did you ever try to find an Ir/meanwhileOnSlashdot, or r/MeanwhileOnFark, or Ir/MeanwhileOnStumbleUpon? I'm guessing no. I'm guessing your transition to Reddit did not require grieving, and your old site drifted out of your daily experience naturally For many of us, however, Reddit was taken away from us, when we considered ourselves among the core users. Even with the awareness of its decay (which certainly predated Ellen Pao by a good year or two) no one can say that Pao's killing blow to Reddit's unique value proposition wasn't sudden and alarming. She was suddenly the nurse of a patient that needed an intensive course of treatment, and, instead, she only made the sickness worse. She ignored the illness of powerusers, censorship on the frontpage default mods using the delete button like a downvote button, and, instead, she deleted legal content she found personally distasteful and made public appearances that flew the whole plane towards censorship, "safe space" free-speech chilling, and the tyranny of thought-terminating political correctness. I'm confident I'm not alone when I say that Reddit's primary value proposition was that it was an open discussion forum that promoted free speech on any (legal) content. To have the CEO claim that this value was worthless was sudden and alarming Thus, given the unpredicted and distasteful way in which we were made to transition from Reddit to another discussion platform, we were left with something of a grieving process. I think /v/meanwhileonreddit represents one of the final stages before we accept that it's gone and stop thinking about it at al the stage of anger. Seeing how SJWs act on Reddit, how they claim that anyone who doesn't support censorship must support child p---------- or racism, or how Ellen Pao can continue to lie to the website and agree that only people from "a toxic s-------" (FPH) are the only ones who were upset by the censorship--these things piss me the f--- off I think this is a natural part of the transition to Voat, and why /v/mor is actually valuable Conclusion, TL;DR: So, when you see posts in v/meanwhileonreddit, and you want to comment "I don't get it, can we just ignore Reddit already?" that's great. It means you're further along in seeing Reddit as just a site that lost its value, and you're ready to use Voat as it was meant to be used: without being constantly compared to a dysfunctional, damaged site. Not all of us are ready to bury Reddit, however, and need more closure than what Ellen Pao's coup de grace was able to give us. So l say there's value to be had in making fun of Reddit, getting angry at how it's being flown into the ground, and brainstorming ways we can prevent the same thing from happening here. The anger stage of dealing with the death of Reddit has value to Voat and to Voaters.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/000/983/056/465.png)

Someone threatens to force subreddit bans

Reddit Social meet up
NeoFAG
![/rneofag was a ridiculous success story, in life and death. (self.KotakulnAction submitted 22 minutes ago by KingRoyMustang From voat: We all knew it was coming. The inevitable subreddit deletion. NeoFAG didn't fly too close to the sun, it flew straight f------ into it with no f---- given. I would often see other gaming related subreddits comment on neofag when neogaf came up, usually that it was a great expose on one of the most precipitous declines of any community on the internet, but also that it was f------ brutal. That is the reason the deletion was talked about, usually in a sooner rather than later manner. NeoFAG pulled major focus for it's brutality. The chans and various anti SJW gaming subreddits will often lose focus, suffering internal drama and propping up random internet celebrities, but neofag came with a scary dedication to exposing the major and minor causes of the downfall of a once decent site NeoGAF always had mentally unstable mods and a flip flopping socially retarded owner, but it was far looser and laid back years ago. Other sites popped up to mock GAF along the years, but their origins were in specific drama, as opposed to /r/neofags purpose to bring new nonsense to light every single day. This is why it gained so much traction and invoked the ire of many of GAFs protected elite. For example, believe it or not, GAFs black community used to be quite funny and irreverent, roasting their own if anyone acted like an idiot. But then Besada, Mumei and Bish held a competition to see who could suck the most black d---, resultingg in huge ego's and insane black posters who once upon a time would have been chewed out for being bitches, but are now coddled and aware that no matter how many infractions they make, no perm will come The Jado leak was major. It was obvious the mods would look after their friends, but there was no real proof. Jado gave us it, straight from the mouth of one of the most awful, power hungry, delusional fantasists i've ever seen moderate a forum. Straight white males need to hear these voices', well guess what d------, surely the fact that you keep having to ban these idiots for non stop s--- posting is enough evidence that your little 'protected voices' experiment attracted morons who knew that could get away with acting like morons? What a revelation. The deletion was s---, not going to lie. I'm sure the main players are happy it's gone, but the damage is already done. NeoFAG was up for FAR longer than i expected, considering it's most famous feature was the rolling 'freak banner. But lets talk about the nature of it's death. NeoFAG could have been unceremoniously deleted in a wide sweep of subreddit bans, becoming lost in the mix. Maybe KotakulnAction would have noted, but nothing outside of that. But no, NeoFAG was one of the first FIVE to go. That is f------ HUGE. Countless websites and subreddits looking through that tiny list, understanding what the others were (fatpeoplehate is pretty self explanatory) but wondering what the f--- NeoFAG was. It was the question popping up all over the internet. Who and what is neoFAG? A subreddit dedicated to mocking a gaming forum Why? No doubt people went digging out of confusion. If neoFAG was banned in the second, third wave, it probably wouldn't have made it to news sites (with synopsis given) and It wouldn't have prompted curiosity from those fortunate to have never been exposed to the ever deepening void of s--- that is GAF. If it had been banned in a first wave of say, 100 subreddits, there would have been very little exposure Whether or not there was some collusion between the corrupt s---- at the top of reddit and the corrupt s---- at GAF is nothing but speculation. But if it was a showing of power, to make an example out of those who dare to forgo any niceties or e-celeb distractions in order to s--- on the SJW cancer that spreads throughout moderation and ownership on the internet, someone f----- up. It would have been great for /r/neofag to continue, steadily growing in userbase while being easy to find for any members with a growing discontent for the current atmosphere on GAF, but as i said before, we all knew it was coming. We just didn't expect to get a f------ state funeral. Discussion about how free speech should be handled
![↑ [Discussion] Should the limits of speech on the internet be decided by a handful of CEOs? (self.Kotakul Action) submitted 6 minutes ago by Namrok More and more lately, I see this same argument. "Reddit/Twitter/Facebook is a privately owned company. You are using it for free. They can permit or disallow whatever they want." It's hard to argue against such a myopic view. It's technically true But let me ask you this. In the 21st century, do we want the limits of speech decided by a handful of CEOs? Do we want to surrender truly free speech to platform holders only? We haven't just seen FatPeopleHate and other distasteful subreddits vanish. Weve seen a lot of legitimate research, critique and news vanish down the memory hole too. Individual subreddits have their unequally applied sort of true from a certain point of view reasons for vanishing articles their community clearly wants to discuss. But when they appear on other subreddits, they still vanish off rlall once the admins in San Francisco wake up in the morning. And using their media connections, I've seen almost every tech page I read cover this negatively I have never in my life seen the news defend a CEO which takes over a company, horribly misunderstands it's customers and culture, and runs it into the ground. Ever. It's entirely unprecedented. But they are defending Ellen Pao on blatantly ideological grounds, and it disgust me I can't believe my generation, the one that grew up with unfettered free speech on the wild west of the internet, grew up and went "We've outgrown offensive speech, now nobody else should get to enjoy it either." 4 comments share all 4 comments sorted by: best ▼ H sscat [score hidden] 3 minutes ago F--- no!
