Sakurai Explains Why Characters Like Villager and Wii Fit Trainer are in Smash Bros. He's generally tasked with not only overseeing the game's development, but selecting which characters get a spot on the game's roster While some characters, such as Mega Man, seem like a great fit for the series, there are definitely some questionable additions. Along with everybody else,I was baffled when Villager was announced as a fighter, but even more so when Wii Fit Trainer was revealed. In a recent interview with the Japanese magazine publisher Nintendo Dream, Masahiro Sakurai opened up about the game's odd characters on the roster and how he went about selecting them. For Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it was discussed that non-combatant-like characters wouldn't be added, but this time an important aspect of the concept was "if that character is included, could interesting things be done and could that fighter express individual traits?" When making this game, it was necessary to think very seriously "how to create new fun things". I was able to think in my head the way how Wii Fit Trainer and Villager would operate so therefore they were included. Games must be completed properly, and in order to have fun gameplay for you and your opponent, each character has to have individuality.
