Lord of the Rings and...Christianity? (self. atheism) submitted 3 years ago by oneangryatheist (E As both an atheist and an avid fan of Tolkien's work, it annoys me to no end whenever someone tries to state, as if it were a point of fact, that the entire story of The Lord of the Rings is some long drawn out allusion to Christianity They usually say overly-simplistic things like "The Ring is obviously a reference to Satan" or "Gandalf died and rose again, just like Jesus." Am I the only person who encounters these bizarre and misled individuals? I find it offensive to both myself and the memory of Tolkien, given his fervent denial in the introduction to Lord of the Rings of any part of his story being allegorical in nature. I completely agree with the idea that literature is open to interpretation and everyone is welcome to have their own opinion, but to state it as a fact, or worse, claim that Tolkien himself declared such a thing, is just wrong. TL;DR: A lot of Christians have tried telling me that the LOTR is inspired by Christianity, I disagree, and wonder if other atheist Tolkien fans have had this argument before The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciouslj so at first, but consciously in the revision." - J.R.R.
