While a lot of more mature horror franchises do technically have what you might call "mascots" (Jason, Michael Meyers, the xenomorphs,) what FNaF or Poppy Playtime do is apply actual principles of children's mascot design to the characters. An especially interesting pattern I've noticed is that a lot of them essentially have two modes: a jumpscare or chase mode, where their more disturbing or threatening details are exposed, but also a "docile" mode where those details are invisible. FNaF animatronics are relatively friendly looking performing on stage in full lighting, Huggy Wuggy is slightly offputting but not that intimidating when his mouth is closed, Bendy is represented in his own game by cutesy drawings, the neighbor in Hello Neighbor... really isn't scary at all in terms of character design, etc. Basically, imagine if Slenderman only had tentacles and no face on the game over screen, and otherwise looked like... I dunno, a handsome young anime businessman. The developers are having their cake and eating it, with the way they design these characters. The scare factor comes from small, easily obscured details, leaving the overall form very appealing and marketable.

It's a horror game that is literally about a monster character, same as slender, same as FNAF, same as siren head. All would be "mascot horror" regardless of gameplay or puzzles

Trouble is Twitter normies are going absolutely batshit for it so you just KNOW it's going to be another FNAF, Bendy, Hello Neighbor, Baldi, Tattletail scenario. It becomes trendy, the creator sells out and merch floods every Target shelf in the country and sequels are rushed out and it becomes just another franchise that stupid toddlers will squeeze dry of anything that makes it even remotely scary.
