Mo'o
![Artist's Description:
In Hawai’ian folklore, giant reptilian beings called Mo’o are believed to haunt the islands. These entities can shapeshift at will and may help or harm mortals depending on their mercurial moods. In their natural shape mo’o are described as jet black lizards, large as a small whale. They are rarely seen in this form, though, since they usually appear as mortal women, beautiful and seductive but also fierce and dangerous.
Mo’o inhabit rivers, waterfalls and other bodies of water. They are particularly associated with loko i’a (fish ponds)- large, artificial coves create by building up walls of lava rock to form a partially-enclosed bay in which aquatic vegetation is cultivated to attract herbivorous fish. In addition to being a major source of protein, many loko i’a are also sacred sites and are thus protected by the fearsome “lizard goddesses”.
Many families of native Hawaiian descent have ancestral guardians or ‘aumakua (the apostrophe at the beginning signals a glottal stop like the pause in the Cockney English pronunciation of bottle as “bo’le). ‘Aumakua often take the forms of animals such as sharks, owls, birds and, for some families, Mo’o.
The most well-known of these Mo’o ‘aumakua- and one especially important to Hawaiian history- is Kihawahine. She is said to live in the loko i’a of Moku’ula, a sacred site on the island of Maui. In times past the chiefs of Maui ruled from this site with the Mo’o acting as intermediary between the mortal and spirit worlds. When King Kamehameha the Great united all the Hawaiian islands under his rule in 1810, he made Moku’ula the seat of his kingdom and married a woman, Keōpūolani, whose ‘aumakua was Kihawahine. This union put him under the reptile goddess’ protection and granted him good fortune as he fought to maintain his kingdom. Today Moku’ula is buried under a baseball field in the town of Lahaina, but plans are underway to restore the ancient site.
Like many supernatural beings, Mo’o can be malevolent as well as helpful, and there are numerous stories in Hawai’ian mythology of these creatures antagonizing humans. In one legend the volcano goddess Pele sends her sister Hi’iaka on a mission to rescue Pele’s mortal lover who has been captured by a trio of mo’o. In addition to these three, Hi’iaka must contend with Kikipua, a mo’o woman who tries to devour the goddess by casting an illusion that makes her long, reptilian tongue look like a wooden bridge.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/069/243/3df.jpg)

Quinametzin
![According to the Aztecs, the Quinametzin were the dominant race on earth before the creation of humans.
They stood at 12ft (3.7m) tall and were said to have been responsible for the creation of the city of Teotihuacan and the pyramid of Cholula.
It is said that the reason the gods destroyed them was because they did not venerate the gods enough and had to be purged for the grave sins they had committed.

(Day 20 - Obscure Monstergirl Challenge 2020)
Monstergirl description: Believed to have existed on Mexico in ancient times, these giants were known for their skills at construction and architecture, assisted by their large size and strength. It is said that each toe on their feet had the same size of a human hand, and given their size and gentle nature, they used to pull humans into tight hugs and snuggle with them like plushies. While history describes their extinction from the hands of merchants who desired their lands, it is unknown if they still have a hidden settlement somewhere, built with their ancient skills.
Artist notes: The first Aztec monstergirl of this challenge, there'll be a few more coming. I like the concept of giants, but it's a bit tough to make them "look" giant when drawing. Kinda like asking someone to draw a cup of clear water, hard to do it without something to compare to. ^_^'](/assets/image-covers/nsfw.png)

Cihuātēotl
![When an Aztec woman experienced childbirth, it was seen as a violent and laborious effort likened to the intensity of battle. It was believed that the child was sent down to the earth by the gods, and the woman had to fight and struggle in order to bring it into the world.
The new-born child was seen as a sufficient reward if she was successful and emerged victorious from her “fight” with the gods, but if she lost and proved unsuccessful, then she died and her soul underwent transformation into a Cihuātēotl.
The Cihuateteo resided in a region in the west known as Cihuatlampa, the “place of women.” Each day, they guided the sun into the west from noon until sunset, and are occasionally suggested to have even borne it through the underworld until it rose again.
They were aided by the spirits of male warriors, and this practice of guiding the sun was seen as exclusive to these two groups of the deceased—it was an honour that was not bestowed on any other individuals.
On five specific days in the Aztec calendar, the cihuateteo descended to the earth: 1 Deer, 1 Rain, 1 Monkey, 1 House, and 1 Eagle. While on earth, they were considered to be demons of the night, and often haunted crossroads.
Roadside shrines were often erected to appease them, as they were believed to steal children, cause madness and seizures, and induce men to adultery.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/069/097/9a1.jpg)

Chaneque
![The Chaneque are little nature sprites from Aztec mythology that serve as guardians of the forest.
Upon detecting an intruder, they would them proceed to frighten them using any means at their disposal.
Once a person was sufficiently spooked, the soul would come flying out of their body, at which point the Chaneque would steal it and take it back to their home in the underworld, usually through a portal hidden in a dry Kapok tree.
If the victim did not perform a ritual soon after this happened to reclaim their soul, they would soon grow sick and die.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/069/087/3bc.jpg)
