Super Mario RPG
Origin of Culex's name
![Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog The name of Culex, the hidden boss from Super Mario RPG, is actually an extremely oblique reference to Golbez, a boss from Final Fantasy IV, that only players with extraordinary knowledge of entomology (the study of insects) would be able to catch while playing. In Super Mario RPG, Culex is an optional boss that is, in essence, one large reference to the Final Fantasy series, particularly to Final Fantasy IV. He uses elemental crystals in battle, similar to ones found in Final Fantasy IV, and his battle theme is a remix of the boss battle theme from that game. While Culex is simply named "Crystaller" in the Japanese version of the game, his English name is the name of a genus of mosquitoes. Despite seeming like a typical fantasy villain name, the name "Culex" is actually an extremely obscure reference to a villain from Final Fantasy IV, Golbez. In Final Fantasy IV, Golbez is a major antagonist who is searching for a set of elemental crystals, similar to the ones used by Culex. Golbez is actually named after a type of black fly native to Serbia, called the Golubatz fly (also spelled Golubac fly, named after Golubac, a town on the river Danube, where the flies were historically the most prevalent). Black flies feed on the blood of humans and other mammals, similar to mosquitoes. The decision to name Culex after another type of bloodsucking insect, using a scientific name, in reference to Golbez means only players with extremely high levels of knowledge about insects would be able to pick up on the reference. e finallantayfandom.com/vobec cabdrect.org/cabs/53290051 ון A Culex pipiens mosquito.
