Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In Super Mario World, Yellow Koopas are supposed to jump over incoming shells, but sometimes fail to do so and get killed by the shell anyway. This is caused by the developers attempting to optimize the game by only having the Koopa check for shells once every four frames. Normally, shell-less Yellow Koopas in Super Mario World are supposed to jump over shells that are kicked at them. However, sometimes they jump too late and get killed by the shell anyway. What is causing this internally is a misguided attempt to save processing power by only having the Koopa check for shells in front of it every 4 frames instead of every frame. If the shell is timed in such a way it is just outside of the Koopa's "field of vision" on one checking frame, it may be too late to avoid it on the next.
