Above all else, above everyone else, your art should be a personal passion that you do because YOU want to do it and you want your ideas put onto paper or computer or whatever medium you use Sure, the allure and satisfaction of others enjoying your art is always an amazing and lovely thing, and you of course want to make things that will make others just as happy as you are. But if you come from a place where you aren't enjoying yourself, where you're making things because you feel obligated because of envy or desire for recognition or friendly relations or whatever, then your art is going to start suffering. It becomes less about the art and more about the attention, and while it's not a bad mindset on its own, it can become one without moderation and self-regulation So I encourage you to try and become comfortable with the fact that other artists might get more attention for you. You should focus on making yourself happy with your art before worrying about making others happy and getting their following and friendly comments and such. It's not a matter of wanting or striving for one or the other, it's just a matter of making sure your priorities are set straight enough for you to make art happily without the need for audience validation. I draw and draw with the goal in mind to improve but I just haven't. l've hit a brick wall and practice doesn't seem to help. I continue anyway but as I'm naturally very negative, if I can't have someone, anyone tell me at least I did one good job, I start listening to the nagging voices of my head. If I knew how to pull myself out of this rut mentally and artistically, I wouldn't be such a fat ugly p------------ with not a soul who cares about them in the world That's a tough but relatable mindset to be having, anon. A lot of artists go through that, a plateau of perceived improvement, where it doesn't seem like anything's getting better. Artists are their own worst critics, after all My two pieces of advice would be to, one, start training yourself to not worry so much about it. Sure, there's always the need and drive to do better, but if that becomes the entire point of your craft, only trying desperately to make huge strides in quality, then it and you are going to suffer. Make things for fun. S----- little doodles, things for fun, jokes, quick things that you can just pump out. Have fun with drawing agairn And my second piece of advice would be making something very outside of your normal. Mostly do sketches? Try inking and coloring and shading. Mostly do comedic pieces? Try something emotional and moody. Mostly do somber, finished, detailed pieces? Do something quick and goofy. Hell, if you're a drawing artist, try writing something instead. Expanding beyond your normal, what you practice the most, allows yours elf to open up creatively and experience-wise, and can invigorate your creative juices It's tough, anon, believe me, I know all too well.
