I don't think the scary part is that you can die so needlessly. Without warning, at the whimsy of someone else. That is, has always been, and always will be, true. This is something everyone knows, and though it isn't a pleasant thought, it isn't scary in the same way. No. The scary part, I think, is that not only you, but everyone can die so needlessly. Without warning, at the whimsy of someone else. It's a complete obliteration. Not only you, but your legacy. Because no matter what you achieve, what will it be worth when there is no-one left. Nothing. That's the scary part. That no matter what you do - no matter what you will do - someone can obliterate it all at the press of a button. Does that not turn the sweet taste of every victory you make into ashes in your mouth? Of course it does. What worse is, nothing can ever taste but ashes again. You can't put the genie back in the bottle once it's out. In our folly we made the bomb and thus the secret is out. Even if we get rid of the ones we've made there will always be the possibility that someone makes a new one in the future. So, what can we do? There is nothing we can do to make things good again. Yet. There are things we can do to make things better. Step one is to destroy every god-forsaken nuclear bomb in existence. There can be no other solution. There can be no hope while they still exist. Step two? I don't know. To be honest, I have lost all faith that we will ever reach step two.
