Bungie Makes Same Mistake As Recent Nintendo Gaffe, Uses Uncredited Fan Art In 'Destiny' Cutscene
A second case of a video game company seemingly nicking fan art has hit the internet.
On Friday, a fan artist was stunned to discover that their art of Mario character Rosalina had made it into the unused files of Mario+Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. Coincidentally, three days prior, fan artist Julian Faylona had a near-identical revelation after seeing their art used in a cutscene for the FPS Destiny 2.
Titled The Veil of Darkness, Faylona's piece was first published in 2020 on DeviantArt, and it appears a color-altered version of it then appeared in a cutscene that sheds light on some of the mysteries of Destiny lore from the video game's current expansion _Lightfall _.
Unlike the Nintendo case, which Nintendo has yet to respond to and is legally tricky since the fan artist's work never actually appeared in the game, Bungie has been forthright in explaining how the error occurred and how they will rectify the situation.
The company told PC Gamer that an external vendor contracted to work on the trailer mistook the piece for official Destiny art. They say they have since reached out to Faylona to properly compensate them for the mistaken use of their art.
In the same piece, PC Gamer spoke to Faylona, who seemed very relaxed about the mixup.
"To be honest, I'm genuinely excited and happy that the piece I made 2 years ago – which, even back then, I fully acknowledged is based on the Destiny franchise – made it into the cutscene. It was totally unexpected and completely caught me by surprise. So much so that I wanted to make a shoutout about it."
