The last of us original vs remaster graphics meme.

The Last Of Us, widely heralded as one of the best games of the PlayStation 3, is getting a remake, coming out on the PlayStation 5 on September 2nd, 2022. This struck many as odd, as the common consensus seems to be that The Last Of Us has aged just fine since 2013 and has no need for a remake, especially considering a remastered version of the 2013 release is available for download on the PlayStation Store.

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson revealed the remake at yesterday's Summer Games Fest stream. A leaked listing for the game describes it as "a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat." The base remake will retail for $70.

Though The Last Of Us is inarguably one of the most beloved games of all time by critics and audiences alike, the news of an expensive remake didn't exactly hype fans up, as many couldn't imagine what new features Naughty Dog could add to a twice-released 10-year-old game that would justify the $70 price tag.

In many cases, the selling point of remakes is improved graphical quality or giving the original a much-needed layer of polish, neither of which felt necessary for The Last Of Us to many commenters.

While many poked fun at the remake and made memes, there are definitely some people who are excited about the graphical improvements shown off in the trailer.

Though the reaction to The Last Of Us remake is overall tepid for now, we'll have to wait until September to see if players feel the remake justifies the hefty price tag.
