Ok there are quite a few people freaking out about this COPPA thing. I'm no lawyer, but I've seen the whole first season of CSI Miami and I once negotiated my way out of a parking ticket. So take this advice as you wil: COPPA is not about videos suitable for kids. It's about data collection Because there are special privacy requirements provisioned for kids, and because a big fine was handed out with the possibility for more, YouTube is making a two-tier system: FOR KIDS videos. NOT FOR KIDS videos. FOR KIDS videos are not allowed to collect personal info, specifically names, addresses, etc. So videos made for kids will see a noticeable reduction in CPM and revenue as their ads will not be as personalised as before. Although they still will be personalised to some degree. Now, the bit people are really freaking out over. Breaches of this rule may include a fine of up to $42,000 per instance The language of the ruling implies this would be passed on to the creator. And a few spokespeople have reiterated as much. However. In the real world, this won't happen. The purpose and focus of this ruling is Data Collection and kids privacy. If you're a regular YouTuber so long as you're not targeting kids and trying to get their personal information, you're not going to be on the hook for a $42k fine. Especially when the process is as casual as clicking the wrong box or ignoring a form. It will not happen. People have taken a relatively vague sub-clause over on page 24 of an unfinalised process, and blown it way out of scale to something that would effectively put private individuals up to the potential collective tune of billians of dollars. That won't happen. f something like that ever did happen: First would be legal push back Second would be push back from YouTube by removing the above- mentioned personalisation by default. Third would be the FTC even going lol w-- we're not going to enforce this -- we're not dealing with literally tens of thousands of lawsuits.. Meanwhile, good luck to them chasing up all those international creators (e.g. Australia, India, etc.) not under FTC jurisdiction. Point is, 99% of youtubers are not on the radar here. If you're worried it's because you're reading too deeply into it. Everyone relax Although if you're running an external website and funneling kids through there to buy merch, you might want to double-check what info you're collecting on customers -H, esg -2180
