Focusing on religion: Judaism was extremely conservative even by the standards of pre-antiquity; the first and second Commandments alone ("Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.") made the practitioners a lot of enemies. Jesus made a point that faith shouldn't be about judging people to lord your holiness over them, it should be about spreading love and neighborly feelings. If a politician were to verbatim quote a lot of Jesus's messages right now, they'd be called a "spineless leftist too soft on crime."
On the broader side: moral standards don't slip, they change shape. Look at ancient civilizations, you'll find stuff that's conservative, progressive, AND alien compared to today all in one batch of standards. In Greece for example, you weren't shamed for being gay, but you were shamed for being the bottom. Standards of nudity and skimpiness are all kinds of fun (naked breasts for example have only been "nudity" for a few hundred years)
